About the Position
Weitz Investment Management currently offers a hybrid work environment (2-days remote/3-days onsite) for this position.
The Fixed Income Trader is responsible for executing fixed income trading activities for the Weitz Fixed Income team. T his role is critical to providing seamless trade execution and support for the firm’s fixed income mutual funds, ETFs, and institutional separate accounts, including ensuring pre-trade compliance and best execution, liquidity management, and alignment with portfolio strategies, client guidelines, and internal policies. The position requires deep market insight, a disciplined approach to risk, and experience navigating complex fixed income markets including government, investment grade corporates, high yield, securitized instruments, and municipal bonds.
Essential Functions
- Execute buy and sell orders across a wide range of fixed income securities in accordance with portfolio mandates and compliance guidelines.
- Interact with authorized participants (APs) and market makers to facilitate ETF creations and redemptions.
- Monitor live ETF market conditions, including bid-ask spreads, liquidity, and NAV deviations.
- Performs market and risk analysis for the portfolio management team to identify critical data for decision-making. Tracks relative value withing relevant sectors. Interprets risk of new events across a broad sector class.
- Works closely with portfolio managers and analysts to implement investment strategies and optimize trade execution.
- Manage cash flows and contributes to liquidity forecasts for daily trading needs.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal colleagues across all areas of the firm, as well as external resources such as traders, investment bankers, rating agencies, issuers, industry experts and electronic trading platforms to ensure access to liquidity and favorable pricing.
- Assist in developing and enhancing trade execution tools, processes, and systems, including utilizing electronic trading platforms (e.g., Bloomberg, Tradeweb, MarketAxess) and market surveillance tools to optimize execution and maintain compliance.
- Prepare trade cost analyses and execution quality reports.
- Ensure timely and accurate trade reports, including trade allocations, confirmations, and settlements; adhere to all internal policies and regulatory standards.
- Conduct pre-trade and post-trade compliance checks to ensure adherence to client mandates and internal policies.
- Participate in broader team discussions regarding market strategy, sector allocations, and investment themes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or related field; CFA or progress toward CFA is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years ‘buy-side’ trading experience in fixed income markets, preferably with experience trading for mutual funds, ETFs, and separate accounts.
- Proficient with Excel, Bloomberg, TradeWeb, MarketAxess, and other electronic trading platforms; familiarity with order management systems; knowledge of Enfusion OMS is a plus.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements impacting fixed income trading.
- Deep understanding of fixed income instruments, market structure, and regulatory environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and succinctly.
- Expected to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
