Putnam Investments, a Specialist Investment Manager (SIM) of Franklin Templeton, is a diversified, equity-only asset manager with roots dating back to 1937. We manage a range of active equity portfolios with a focus on stock-specific opportunities. Our approach — stock-driven rather than style-driven — is designed to produce consistent outperformance, regardless of the market environment. The Opportunity

The Associate on the Sustainable Equity team will research and analyze a wide range of companies across sectors, conducting research that links relevant sustainability/ESG (environmental, social, and governance) issues to compelling fundamentals and valuation. The associate will partner with our Sustainable Equity PM and analyst team, generating investment ideas that are relevant for these products and for other interested PM teams across the equity group. The goal of the associate is to develop differentiated insights that allow for high conviction investment opportunities. These conclusions are derived from a creative, thorough and iterative research process, that incorporates relevant or material ESG issues and forward-looking sustainability themes into the fundamental research process. A successful Associate will be able to generate investment ideas across multiple sectors and contribute to portfolio construction over time.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze a wide range of companies across sectors, with a focus on companies whose fundamental prospects benefit from sustainability strengths

  • Develop clear, insightful analysis of companies and industries that provides relevant investment insights

  • Develop and maintain deep understanding of competitive landscape, sector specific and sustainability-related themes, management styles and business structure, etc.

  • Leverage network of industry experts, sustainability experts, and other unique sources of information and insights to develop differentiated views on themes, sectors, and stocks.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with company management teams, including by conducting frequent meetings.

  • Build and maintain detailed, specific, complete models on coverage.

  • Develop conviction in new and existing buy ideas through a combination of differentiated qualitative and quantitative research and insights.

  • Communicate clear rationale for recommendations to teammates and portfolio managers, sharing investment insights more broadly across the investment team.

  • Actively monitor companies under coverage and communicate important changes in a timely manner.

  • Develop an understanding of relevant sustainability themes and environmental, social, and governance issues, with a focus on how these themes can impact company fundamentals, valuation, and stock performance

What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?

  • Associate or Analyst with a Minimum of 2 years’ experience in equity analysis and sustainability research

  • Requires a Bachelor of Arts or Science from an accredited university

  • Outstanding financial, fundamental, strategic, and communication skills.

  • Strong interest in relevant ESG issues and sustainability themes, and in how these impact fundamentals and stock performance.

  • Ability and interest in conducting self-directed deep research.

  • Ability to articulate and present complex information in an understandable and succinct format.

  • Ability to put forth an opinion, often in situations where there is a time and/or information constraint.

  • Ability to balance conviction with flexibility.

  • Strong passion for stocks, company analysis, and investing.

  • Ambitious, driven, team player.

  • Strong work ethic and high level of intellectual curiosity

Compensation Range: Franklin Templeton offers employees a competitive and valuable range of total rewards—monetary and non-monetary — designed to support their well-being and recognize their time, talents, and results. We expect the annual salary for this position to range between $110,000 - $140,000 , plus bonus depending on location and level of relevant experience.
